Debunking

1 min read Updated March 28, 2026

Debunking is the cornerstone of credible paranormal research, serving as the process of finding rational, man-made, or environmental explanations for anomalous claims. A responsible investigator enters a site with the goal of proving it is *not* haunted. By checking for drafts, loose floorboards, electromagnetic interference from old appliances, and light leaks, the researcher clears the ‘clutter’ of mundane causes.

Only after every possible natural explanation has been exhausted can a piece of evidence be considered truly anomalous. This skeptical approach is what separates serious investigation from mere ‘ghost hunting.’ By prioritizing debunking, the researcher ensures that the evidence they do present—whether an EVP or a photo—has the highest possible integrity and can stand up to outside scrutiny.
